Consensual Relations with Students

The relationship between teacher and student is the foundation of the academic mission of the University. This relationship vests considerable trust in the teacher, who, in turn, bears the responsibility to serve as mentor, educator, and evaluator. In discharging this responsibility, teachers are accountable for behaving in a manner that reflects the highest levels of professional responsibility, recognizes the dignity and worth of each person at the University, and protects the integrity of the student-teacher relationship.

Teacher-student relationships carry risks of conflict of interest, breach of trust, abuse of power, and breach of professional ethics. For these reasons, teachers must not engage in any consensual sexual relationships with a student while the teacher is in a position of supervisory academic authority with respect to the student.

Nor may a teacher assert any supervisory academic authority with respect to a student who was the subject of a previous consensual sexual relationship.

R omantic relationships between university professors and their students are becoming less and less acceptable. Many of the new university policies that have emerged in the last few years have focused on undergraduates and how to better protect them, typically with a campus-wide ban on staff dating undergrads. But a number of universities also demand that faculty members do not start relationships with graduate students they supervise. This month, Princeton University went further and declared that faculty members were no longer allowed to date any graduate student—even if the couple works in different departments.

Pre-existing relationships are exempt from the new rule. The university is encouraging greater collaboration across departments, Burdine says, which extends the concerns about unequal power between a professor and a student beyond the immediate supervisory relationship. Princeton is the first university to take the campus-wide step but others will follow, says Jamelle Sharpe , who works at the University of Illinois College of Law in Urbana-Champaign and has surveyed academic policies in this area.

Sharpe is leading a cross-campus review of the University of Illinois regulations, and his team will make recommendations later this year. He says universities have traditionally distinguished between undergraduates and graduate students when they set consensual relationships policy, and assumed that undergrads need more protection. But he says that may no longer be appropriate. And, he adds, it could be misleading to assume that graduate students are more resilient because they are usually older and so more mature.

Those steps are not popular with everyone. Cornell University considered and rejected a similarly broad ban on faculty and graduate student relationships across different departments when it updated its new consensual relationships policy last year. Universities are often in small places, which makes it difficult for junior faculty members to find people who share their interests.

How to Do Research With a Professor

The days of Princeton University professors dating graduate students in other departments are coming to an end , campus officials said. Professors had previously been permitted to have relationships with graduate students as long as they were not in their classes or under their supervision. So, for example, an English professor was allowed to date a Ph. But, Princeton reconsidered the policy in the wake of the MeToo movement and nationwide calls for stricter guidelines to prevent professors from having too much power over graduate students, especially in personal relationships.

Princeton already banned all relationships between faculty and undergraduate students.

Relationships between professors and students are different than relationships in the workplace where dating is all but an acceptable practice.

With shows like Pretty Little Liars and Friends normalizing professor-student relationships, it isn’t quite clear whether or not these kinds of connections are actually ethically OK. Wondering if you can you date your RA, TA, or professor? This isn’t a question you should feel ashamed ask, especially if you spend a lot of quality time with them.

Between office hours, dorm meetings, and recitation, it’s perfectly natural to feel somewhat bonded to these authority figures. At the time, Fitz didn’t know Montgomery would become his high school English student, but he continued to pursue a relationship with her after he found out. Throughout both series, the inappropriate nature of these relationships is frowned upon, but not condemned.

In real life, however, the consequences of engaging in a relationship with a student can carry more weight.

Like many vaguely parental relationships, the pedagogic one can have a strong and unsettling erotic undertow.

Like many young women, however, we were far from immune to the mystique of a man who can command the admiring attention of a crowd, and if he was like most men, he was sensible to the flattery of all those rapt faces. Yet at the root of this queasy dynamic was genuine intellectual excitement. His class set off a series of firecrackers in my understanding of books, ideas whose impact I can still recollect vividly.

That species of desire makes ideas feel more vitally connected to our bodily lives and tells us that passions can be spurred by qualities deeper than six-pack abs. Whether students or their teachers should ever act on such desires, however, has never been an untroubled question. To do so raises the possibility of both favoritism and exploitation. If we think of the university as a purely professional realm, where services are exchanged for a fee among rational economic actors, then sexual relationships seem clearly out of bounds, as they are in most workplaces, especially between supervisors and subordinates.

The relationship between an instructor [2] and a student plays an important role in accomplishing this mission. Certain responsibilities bestowed upon instructors have long been codified in the Faculty Rights and Responsibilities policy:.

The teacher has the responsibility to encourage the pursuit of learning by students by manifesting the best academic standards of the discipline or profession. To accord students respect as individuals, the teacher shall seek to establish a relationship of mutual trust and to establish an appropriate role as an intellectual guide, counselor and mentor, both in and out of the classroom.

The relationship between instructor and student as individuals should be founded on mutual respect, trust and understanding, together with shared dedication to the educational process. Instructors carry a responsibility to students, colleagues, the scholarly community, and the public to perform their duties in a professional, respectful, and collegial manner [4] , and must do so with a commitment to honoring the highest ethical standards.

They are regarded as guardians of the University, charged with preserving in it the privilege of teaching students which society has entrusted to their care. The University is committed to creating a safe learning environment free of conflicts of interest in achieving its educational mission. It is therefore recognized by Michigan State University that consensual amorous and sexual relationships between instructors and students are counterintuitive to these rights and responsibilities, to the environment desired, and in upholding the mission of the University.

Such personal relations undermine the integrity of the instructor and student relationship.
